Alton State Hospital Cemetery

Located off Fosterburg Road, in the Alton City Limits

This small cemetery is mostly grassy area now. The flat stones that once marked the gravesites are now covered with grass and dirt. Maybe 20 markers are still partially visible, with a few stones fully readable. I will be posting this cemetery's burials as I find them in the newspapers. If anyone has a listing of the burials, please contact Bev.

The Alton State Hospital Cemetery was established in 1918.  According to the Alton Evening Telegraph, July 31, 1918, twenty people had already been buried in the new cemetery. The land the cemetery is on was part of the old Kirkpatrick farm. The cemetery adjoins the monument erected to the memory of persons killed in the famous Wood River massacre. Each body is buried in this cemetery with appropriate services.
