FIRE AT PIERRON

Saturday morning a disastrous fire visited the village of Pierron in
Saline Township, Madison County. The following are the losses: J. L.
Schnert’s Hotel, $3,500; stable and ice house, $500, besides losing
considerable furniture. A. Spengel’s loss was $800 on house, and
$300 on stable. Other losses, $150.
Had not the wind changed to the north, the whole village would have
burned, but with a favorable wind and the efficient service afforded
by the Highland Fire Department, the flames were soon under control.
How the fire originated is unknown. It was first discovered in the
stable belonging to Schnert.
